No security without control

Forgery cannot be prevented. Whatever man creates can be copied.

When you know where your products go, at what price and by what route; when you are sure that everything sold in your name really originates from you; when your data is impossible to copy; when you are able to check auctions and the internet market place regularly for offers by product- and brand name counterfeiters; when no falsifications, unauthorised copies nor grey market imports are to be found, then you do not need any additional security measures.

The European Union Commission estimates that between seven and ten percent of all products on the world market are forgeries. In Germany unauthorised copies worth 15 million Euros have been confiscated; in Switzerland counterfeits for more than 10 million Francs.* The loss in turnover for German enterprises is estimated to be around 25 billion Euros; in Switzerland 2 billion Francs – annually!

Just about everything is copied: Music CDs, toys, computer- and training programs, tickets and student cards, insurance policies and luxury articles such as watches, jewellery, perfume, spare parts, classical consumer goods, alcohol and tobacco products. Even movies are secretly videoed and sold as DVDs. But it is not only the economic damage that is a cause for concern. If medications or car spare parts are falsified, life and limb can be in danger.

Whether its the loss of jobs, health hazards, support for organized crime or economic damage – the general public and many industries still believe that it does not concern them.

Increasingly, falsified goods and services are offered via the internet. Internet auctions and online shops offer the ideal environment for professional fraudsters. If at all, customers only become aware of being duped after the sale has gone through.

Tracking down forgeries and protecting their products, digital contents or brand names are a daunting task for any enterprise. But modern information- and communication technologies can increasingly be utilised. Designers, printers, hi-tech- and software enterprises together with research institutions and civil authorities have taken up the challenge to make life as difficult as possible for counterfeiters.
